1) Niche directories
These are directories that accept sites that deal with a specific topic. In some cases, they may deal with multiple topics, but the latter will be related.
2) Local directories
These are directories that only accept sites from a certain geographical location such as a country or a town.
3) General directories
These are your usual directories with tons of categories and where there is almost always a never-ending queue of submitted websites to be reviewed.
In the case of niche directories, you should obviously look for those that relate to your website. Do not try to submit an unrelated site to a niche directory, as you would simply waste your time. Niche directories have a very strict review process. Obviously, depending on the theme of a website, the number of such directories you can use will vary.
Local directories offer the same opportunities of niche directories, except they focus on listing websites related to a specific geographical location. As an example, you could have a directory that lists websites that provide services in New York only. The approval process for local directories is also very strict, and the moderators or webmasters will check your website thoroughly before including it.
General directories are those you should be careful of. Unfortunately, in most cases, this type of directories is quite useless due to the number of websites listed in any such directory. Consequently, you need to pay attention to the following factors when submitting a website to a general directory:
- the number of existing links in the directory
- the quality of these links
- how long it takes for links to be approved
- whether the directory always requires reciprocal links
